Compliance
HIPAA
In 1996, the U.S. Congress enacted the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to protect health insurance coverage, as well as to protect the privacy and security of health information. Under HIPAA, national standards for electronic healthcare transactions and national identifiers for providers, health insurance plans, and employers were established, including the Transactions Rule, Privacy Rule and Security Rule outlined below.
Medrium is a covered entity under HIPAA and ensures the Company’s services are fully compliant with each of HIPAA's requirements.
ELECTRONIC TRANSACTIONS
Under the HIPAA Transactions Rule certain electronic transactions are required to be transmitted and received in standard formats. Medrium takes significant measures to ensure all transactions transmitted and received via the Company’s web-based service are formatted, submitted and processed in HIPAA standard formats.
PRIVACY AND SECURITY
The HIPAA Privacy Rule and Security Rule require patient information to remain protected and confidential. Medrium has implemented policies and procedures to ensure compliance with the Privacy Rule and provides its customers with high-end functionality that enables practices to ensure patient information is only accessed by authorized personnel.
NATIONAL PROVIDER IDENTIFIER
Regulations adopted under HIPAA have mandated the use of a national provider identifier (NPI) in HIPAA standard electronic transactions. Medrium is fully compliant with this regulation and uses a NPI in all transactions processed on behalf of its customers.
